Children can be very literal at times. That is both a blessing and a curse.

My aunt absolutely loathed Calvin & Hobbes . Couldn’t understand why anyone would enjoy reading about such a snot-nosed brat.

Conversely, my cousin and I could sit in a room exchanging C&H punchlines and crack each other up.

Calvin and Hobbes is absolutely brilliant, and is as much an razor sharp observation of life in general as it is about raising a six-year-old. Perhaps your aunt couldn’t see past the slapstick. She must hate Bugs Bunny too.

That’s why you wait until AFTER hearing what the kid has to say before you trot out the "really important" line. Classic Dad blunder.

I still remember a punchline of the fixing the faucet series , where his dad gets back, turns off the water, and then confronts him and Hobbes hiding in the shower of all places. “H-hi dad.” “It’s the end of the world, Calvin”.

Also, Hobbes “aren’t you supposed to turn off the water first?” “That’s the problem, moron! I can’t turn off the water because the faucet leaks! Sheesh, where were you when they were handing out brains... OH NO! AKPPT” “I’ll be awaiting your written apology.”

Edited because I suddenly remembered this flood is, I think, *another* flood event, not the “Calvin attempts to fix the faucet” storyline. Could be wrong, though.

Dilbert. When I was working in the corporate environment, I loved Dilbert. Once I left the corporate environment I didn’t enjoy Dilbert any more because it reminded me of the corporate environment.

We typically ask our boys if they are bleeding. If not, it can (typically) wait.

Mind you, both our boys are hemophiliacs, and this has bitten us on at least one occasion.

What’s the difference a pedant and a kleptomaniac?

She clearly didn’t read into it very far. My parents had their reservations, as well, fwiw.

The first takes things literally and the second takes things, literally.

Calvin and Hobbes is such an interesting comic to me because I was introduced to it when I was near Calvin’s age. As I’ve grown older I’ve gone from relating to Calvin the most to his parents the most to both, and every time I re-read the comics it’s like discovering something new because I have a new perspective on it. I remember when I was a kid I didn’t like the poll comics because I didn’t understand them, but now I think they’re hilarious. It’s interesting to think back to what I thought of the comics then vs. now, and how I’ve always found it relatable in so many different ways over the years... It really is a brilliant comic.

Indeed. Fortunately, our boys are classified a ‘mild’ so they have 1/4 of the normal factor levels a typical person would have, and they don’t have to infuse factor daily.

Our main concerns are head injuries and impacts, external bleeds tend to be not so bad for us.

My reactions are similar, though I began reading C&H when I was in college in the late 80s. Even then, I knew that he was writing from the perspective of a beleaguered parent, but also had extremely keen insights on the human condition. And, like you, my appreciation for the work had matured, especially now that I have three boys of my own, though they are all now in high school. Truly extraordinary stuff.

I remember reading somewhere that he didn’t even have kids of his own or anything like that, he was just writing according to what his inner child would do and it totally works! The man was a genius and his comic is a gift to the world.

So true. I never fully understood it until I worked in that corporate environment; being in the computer/engineering field it hit home more than it would have in a ‘regular’ corporate gig.

I’m with you - now that I’m out of that world I don’t want to think about that world again. It doesn’t help that Scott Adams turns out to be a Trump supporter. Not a republican, which I can understand in the name of balance, but a supporter of that moron, and one who thinks that there’s some sort of genius behind the facade of an idiot . I’m sorry, but bullying and entitlement does not a genius make, no matter how good a manipulator he may be.
